Dr. de Salles received a B.Sc. degree from the Escola de Engenharia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1968, the M.Sc. degree from the Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), Rio de Janeiro, in 1970, and a Ph.D. from the University of London in the U.K. in 1982, all in electrical engineering. 

He was an Associate Professor with PUC/RJ from 1970 to 1991. From 1991 to 2020 he has been a Professor at UFRGS. Now he is retired and is an Invited Professor in the electrical engineering graduate program (PPGEE) at UFRGS.

His main research interests are microwave semiconductor devices, photonic devices, wireless communications, antennas and the biological effects of nonionizing radiation.

Dr. de Salles has authored over one hundred papers in international journals and has presented at many international conferences.
